Buying a furnace or AC shouldn't require a degree. Here are the basics so you can shop with confidence.
Efficiency Ratings
- AFUE (furnaces) — Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency. The percentage of fuel turned into heat. 80% is standard; 90–97% is high-efficiency (condensing).
- SEER2 (air conditioners & heat pumps) — cooling efficiency. Higher is better; today's minimums and high-efficiency models reach into the high teens and beyond.
- HSPF2 (heat pumps) — heating efficiency for heat pumps. Higher means more heat per unit of electricity.
- EER2 — efficiency at peak conditions.
Single-Stage vs. Two-Stage vs. Variable-Speed
- Single-stage — full blast or off. Affordable and reliable.
- Two-stage — a gentler low setting for mild days, full power when needed. Quieter, steadier, more efficient.
- Variable-speed — fine-tunes output continuously for the most even comfort, best humidity control and lowest bills.
Sizing Matters
Bigger isn't better. An oversized system short-cycles, wastes energy and controls humidity poorly. We perform a load calculation to size your system to your actual home.
Matched Systems
For rated performance, the outdoor unit, indoor coil and blower must be matched. We make sure your evaporator coil and fan coil are right for your system.
