Heat Pump — a system that both heats and cools by moving heat rather than burning fuel.

HSPF2 — Heating Seasonal Performance Factor; a heat pump's heating efficiency.

Load Calculation — an engineering calculation (Manual J) used to size equipment to a specific home.

NOx — nitrogen oxides; emissions some regions regulate, addressed by low-NOx furnaces.

Ton — a unit of cooling capacity; one ton equals 12,000 BTU per hour.

Two-Stage / Variable-Speed — equipment that can run at reduced capacity for quieter, more efficient, more even comfort.

Zoning — dividing a home into independently controlled comfort areas.
